Connect WhatsApp

GATE can link a normal WhatsApp number and route selected DMs or groups to one of your bots. Each chat gets its own behavior dial, so the bot can quietly observe, prepare a reply for approval, or send directly.

Linking gives GATE a live session for that WhatsApp number. Start with a number and chats you are comfortable routing through your GATE server, and leave every new binding on Observe until you have reviewed what the bot sees.

Open the dashboard's WhatsApp → Accounts page, choose the organization, and start a connection. GATE displays a live device-link QR code.

On your phone, open WhatsApp's linked-device screen and scan the code. The Accounts page changes from waiting to linked when the GATE-held session is ready. A WhatsApp account linked is the one hard readiness requirement; a bot cannot perform this QR step for you.

2. Bind a chat

Open WhatsApp → Chats, choose a DM or group, and select the bot that should handle it. The binding creates or chooses a real GATE chat session, which is where the bot receives the WhatsApp messages and keeps their history.

Several WhatsApp chats may share one GATE session. When they do, incoming messages carry the source chat's name so the bot can keep them apart; a reply must still target the right chat.

3. Pick the behavior

Every new chat starts on Observe.

  • Off — ignore the chat. Nothing routes and nothing sends.
  • Observe — read and collect context, but never send.
  • Copilot — prepare replies and put them in your private Console chat for approval.
  • Autopilot — allow the bot to send directly into that chat.

Two smaller controls decide whether a group responds only when mentioned or listens ambiently, and whether replies speak as you or carry a visible bot label. Those controls do not override the main behavior dial.

The Console is your own message-yourself chat. It is where you talk to the bot privately and approve Copilot drafts; it is not a public group or customer thread.

4. Monitor and disconnect

Use Activity to review inbound messages, routing decisions, drafts, sends, and errors. Collected shows structured information the WhatsApp workflows have saved from watched chats.

To stop routing one conversation, remove its binding. Its GATE session history is retained. To stop the number, disconnect the account from Accounts; this drops the live socket and changes the account status.

WhatsApp is first-party and does not use the general connect-then-delegate OAuth flow. For email, files, and other provider-backed services, see Connect your accounts.
